Went to a great Italian restaurant in Allston tonight called Carlo's. It's a little hole in the wall kind of place but the food is great and the atmosphere is that kind of fun Tuesday-night neighborhood Italian which is really great. It's down to earth, warm, and just nice (something that's hard to find in Harvard Square). My trip to Carlo's (the second in about a month) has again left me impressed not just with it but with Allston in general. There are a ton of cool places, Common Ground, Big City, Sunrise, and a few others that offer the kind of neighborhood pub feel that no place (don't even go the John Harvard's route) in Harvard Square offers. Allston feels like a real neighborhood and there are definitely alot more places to hang out and eat there than there are in Harvard Square.

Sitting atop a plate of marble swirled vanilla and chocolate sauce is the most delectable concoction in Harvard Square. For fans, like myself, of Sandrine's Chocolate Kuggelhof or Finale's Warm Chocolate Delight (or whatever they call it), this re-worked version of the Daedalus Chocolate Explosion is a superlative experience. The pastry is small, perhaps the size of a half a hockey puck in width and approximately the same size as a hockey puck in height. Perched on top the pastry is a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The center is warm but not gooey. There is no godiva sitting inside, but it's better this way. It is a warm, spectactular cake, not a cop out of melted chocolate.

The proper taste combines a touch of ice cream with the center of the cake, dabbed briefly but without hesitation in the marble array of sauce.

Further proof that Daedalus is the Square's finest eating establishment.

They're all the same. Don't care where you are or what the deal is. It's always modernist style decor with alot of wood, and sharp corners, and receessed neon light coming from the bar area that provides a consistent low-level din that spills out into the dining area making you feel hip while eating your glorified and overpriced chinese food.

The only reason anyone ever goes to one of these places is to impress a girl with their sophistication and comfort with exotic foods like Thai Curried Chicken. I don't want that sh*t. I want my sesame chicken, dumplings, and won ton soup, I want it greasy, and I want it served in a place that looks as if its kitchen hasn't been inspected in a decade.

The Craigie Street Bistro is my pick. Tucked away in the basement of an apartment complex in near the big beautiful Victorians beyond Brattle Street, the bistro offers charm, friendly and never fussy service, and the feeling that you've dropped in on some friends who just happen to be fantastic french chefs.
